Katie Bullock (’23) is a graduating Leadership and Character Scholar from Kansas City Missouri. Here, she describes how experience with the Program and with Wake Forest, in her own words.

My whole life is founded on being outside. And I think there were these real moments for me when I was little of being able to be curious about everything around me and also of being able to be comfortable and in a space where I can let everything wash over me. I can do nothing but observe.

So, the Campus Garden. I started volunteering in my freshman year and the next thing I knew I would spend an hour every Wednesday weeding. And then I would get up and I would leave, and there would be dirt on my knees that I would have to wash off.

I would feel amazing. It felt like I did something meaningful.

I think we live in a world where you do a lot of things every day. Sometimes it’s really hard to see what that end looks like. You can watch a garden grow. You can see the weed beds finished at the end of the day with just the little cabbages or carrots or something having enough space to breathe. And a community—a place of joy and of contentment—would not be possible if you didn’t learn how to nurture that, how to grow that, how to use it, right?

In a lot of ways, that’s all this program does. I think the one thing that I hope I can give to this campus is just a couple careful actions or words here and there. To remind people that community that empathy that love are important. That’s what I want to bring to the world.
