The Program for Leadership and Characters Creates Opportunity for Student Artists and Performers

COVID-19 has prevented many traditional ways for artists to perform their work. In response to this void and our ample opportunity to reflect, the Program for Leadership and Character is inviting student artists and performers to reflect in writing on their experience on the stage, in the gallery, at the podium, and how it has shaped their character.

With three prompts to choose from, students are encouraged to respond with 1000 to 1500 words about the way performance influences and constructs their sense of self and develops traits like authenticity, vulnerability, and creativity. Submitting performers will be invited to workshop their pieces with accomplished writer, memoirist, and professional harpist Dr. April Stace. Writers will then be eligible for printed publication in the forthcoming collection, Performing Character: From Stage to Page.

This project is the result of Director of Programming Ann Phelps’ research on performance and character development. She worked in conjunction with Hannah Lafferrandre, Fellow in the Program for Leadership and Character, and two current Wake Forest students and dancers, Mary Costanza and Katherine Finch, to produce the prompts and facilitate outreach.
